Karnataka Janaarogya Chaluvali (KJC) is a people’s struggle for health rights, dignity and well-being of all citizens, with a focus on the most disadvantaged and marginalized communities. KJC believes that health and health care is not a commodity but an inalienable human right and a marker of equal citizenship. The unregulated profiteering private health sector driven by its need to expand its market is a direct threat to people’s lives and by its very existence will ensure that the public health system is not strengthened. Any form of participation of the private sector in framing health policies, funding or provision of public health services will only increase commercialization of health care services and systems, deepen existing double standards in health care and endanger the health and lives of citizens. KJC believes it is only a nationalized public health system, anchored in the Constitutional paradigm, governed by the principles of social justice, equity, non-discrimination, transparency, accountability and public participation and funded, owned and provisioned solely by the public / government which can ensure socially just, equitable, free, non-discriminatory, good quality health care, sensitive to the needs of all its citizens. KJC believes that its struggle to defend the public health system is part of its political struggle against all neo-liberal, capitalistic forces (including the state) that are seeking to privatize, financialise, corporatise, commercialise and outsource all public systems.
